Not Just for Political Junkies: Election 2020
By May, we’ll have greater clarity, if not resolution, on the Democratic Party opponent for President Trump in November’s election. Providing insights on this election of enormous significance will be two veteran government officials and commentators from alternate sides of the aisle: UChicago Economist Austan Goolsbee and former U.S. Representative Peter Roskam.
Ranked by Georgetown University’s Lugar Center among the top 25 most bipartisan members of Congress, Roskam led efforts to overhaul the nation’s tax code, address the opiod crisis, reduce regulatory barriers in healthcare and fight Medicare fraud. As Chairman of Barack Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers, Goolsbee played a key strategic role in turning around the economy after the administration inherited the worst economic turndown since the Great Depression, while simultaneously approving historic and controversial bailouts of General Motors and Chrysler. Goolsbee’s ability to explain economics clearly has made him a popular commentator in media; comedian Jon Stewart described him as “Eliot Ness meets Milton Friedman.”
With discussion moderation by UChicago Institute of Politics Executive Director Gretchen Crosby Sims, hear Roskam and Goolsbee spar politically and match wits (Goolsbee also was voted “Funniest Celebrity in Washington” in 2009) at what promises to be a memorable Salon Lab dinner on Election 2020.
